Health & Safety
Stay Safe at Work
My name is Meghan Stanczak. You may have seen me as a steward standing alongside my Union siblings in steward meetings, rallies, marches and union actions. I now have the privaledge of working with our members as your Workforce Safety Coordinator.
As a Safety Chairperson at my local Safeway for 13 out of 16 years, my union siblings health and safety needs are always on my mind. From helping with open enrollment, to store hazards needing to be addressed by management , or advocating for my coworkers at rallies and lobby days, I am excited to bring that knowledge and energy to this position.
As the Workforce Safety Coordinator, I am tasked with identifying training needs, coordinating training programs and events, and assisting in the development of workforce skills to enhance our members. Ensuring compliance with union contracts, labor laws, and regulations is an additional function I get to help with. I also continuously review and improve workforce program processes and systems to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and effectiveness.
Our UFCW5 is focused on making sure we help support each other in so many ways. As a previous steward, I am personally invested in empowering stewards with health and safety knowledge that they can share with our other union siblings. Local 5 continues to bargain in Safety Committees or Joint Labor Management Committees into contracts
What is Safety and Health Committee you might ask?
A Safety and Health Committee meets regularly to address health and safety issues. It is made up of members, management, and the union who work together to address safety concerns. A Safety Committee is most effective when we can identify issues and use our collective power and resources together to solve them.
Why is the Safety Committee so important?
Health and safety in the workplace are a major concern for workers. Participating in your safety committee makes for a safer workplace for all. Working together with management, we take a proactive approach to addressing and mitigating risks to workers. Knowing the impact of work-related injuries and illnesses on workers, their families, co-workers, and employers is significant. Together workers have a strong voice on health and safety in their workplaces. Workers feel safe speaking up, and see that their concerns are addressed without retaliation.
The value of the Safety Committee is the ability to develop solutions – by committee members bringing what they learn from union members to their meetings. Once together, we brainstorm and come up with means to improve problems within the workplace. With the goal of reducing or eliminating workplace accidents, we are committed to the safety and health of all members through prevention, education and awareness. The committee creates and fosters a culture of safety and health, and is focused on the concerns of our members.
Benefits of having and participating in a Safety Committee?
The reward of participating in the Safety and Health Committee is a safer workplace for you and your coworkers! Another perk of being on the committee is completing duties and attending meetings on company time. With less injuries, preventing hazardous situations and having a clear path to addressing your concerns, it is a WIN WIN for all.
