July 17th Safeway Bargaining Update
The UFCW 5, 8, and 648 bargaining committee met with Safeway representatives on July 15th and 16th. Following the UFCW membership authorizing an Unfair Labor Practice (ULP) strike, the company requested the intervention of a federal mediator. Unfortunately, over the 2 days of bargaining, the company left without ever making any proposals on wages or healthcare. The company clearly had no interest in addressing the issues important to our hardworking Safeway members in the high cost of living Northern California.
The Unions have made it clear that after 5 months of bargaining, our members demand a fair contract now! As such, we have set a deadline of midnight on Friday July 25th to reach an agreement or a ULP strike will commence. Our International Union and the California State Federation of Labor stand in support of Safeway workers and have sanction a strike if called by the unions. We are meeting with Safeway beginning on July 23rd and insist they show up ready to address secure wages, secure benefits and healthy communities or face a labor dispute.
Pickett Captain training is occurring on the 17th so that we are prepared to take action if an agreement is not reached by the deadline. As previously stated, continue to show up for your shifts until notified by a union representative. Additionally, following our successful demonstration at the Pleasant Hill Safeway, another will be held on July 22nd from 4 to 6 pm at the Safeway on 1450 Howard Ave. in Burlingame to ensure the company knows workers stand united for a fair contract!
El comité de negociación de los sindicatos del UFCW 5, 8 y 648 se reunieron con representantes de Safeway el 15 y 16 de Julio. Después de que los miembros del UFCW autorizaran una huelga por prácticas laborales injustas (ULP), la empresa solicitó la intervención de un mediador federal. Desafortunadamente, durante los 2 días de negociación, la empresa se fue sin hacer ninguna propuesta sobre salarios o atención médica. La empresa claramente no tenía ningún interés en abordar los problemas importantes para nuestros miembros que trabaja en Safeway como el alto costo de vida del norte de California.
Los sindicatos han dejado claro que, tras 5 meses de negociaciones, ¡nuestros miembros exigen un contrato justo ya! Por ello, hemos fijado la medianoche del viernes 25 de Julio como fecha límite para llegar a un acuerdo o, de lo contrario, comenzará una huelga de la ULP. Nuestro Sindicato Internacional y la Federación Estatal del Trabajo de California apoyan a los trabajadores de Safeway y han aprobado sanciones de huelga si los sindicatos la convocan. Nos reuniremos con Safeway a partir del 23 de Julio e insistimos en que se presenten dispuestos a abordar la cuestión de Salarios seguros, beneficios seguros y comunidades saludables, o de lo contrario, se enfrentarán a una disputa laboral.
La capacitación de los Capitanes de Pickett se llevará a cabo hoy 17 de Julio para que estemos preparados para tomar medidas si no se llega a un acuerdo antes de la fecha límite. Como se indicó anteriormente, continúe presentándose a sus turnos de trabajo hasta que un representante sindical le notifique. Además, luego de nuestra exitosa manifestación en el Safeway de Pleasant Hill, se realizará otra el 22 de Julio de 4pm a 6pm en el Safeway localizado en el 1450 Howard Ave en Burlingame para garantizar que la empresa sepa que los trabajadores están unidos por un contrato justo.
