June 10, 2025, Safeway Bargaining Update
Your UFCW 5 bargaining committee, side by side with UFCW 8, and 648, continued contract negotiations on June 10th. There was some minor movement regarding non-economic language, and although we have made some headway with certain proposals, Safeway has fallen short on responding to our economic package or providing information relevant and necessary to bargaining a new agreement.
The Company has had plenty of time to review and consider the Union’s full economic package that was presented to them back in April. When pushed to give us a full economic proposal, Safeway continues to sidestep the matter and has only responded with takeaways and a minimal adjustment to the progression steps.
Additionally, the Union’s frustration has also grown during negotiations due to the Company failing to finalize and make contributions on your behalf, that should have started in August 2024, to the variable pension plan that was negotiated in the prior contract. Safeway has stalled bargaining over the plan design and trust agreement while your contributions continue to be withheld by the company. We have offered Safeway multiple dates to continue bargaining, but the company has yet to agree to any of them.
The committee will continue to fight for a contract you deserve and have earned with your hard work and commitment to the success of the company. Please continue to press the Company for a better contract by wearing your union button every day! Su comité de negociación de UFCW 5, junto con UFCW 8 y 648, continuó las negociaciones contractuales el 10 de junio. Hubo algunos movimientos menores con respecto al lenguaje no económico, y aunque hemos hecho algunos avances con ciertas propuestas, Safeway se ha quedado corto en responder a nuestro paquete económico o proporcionar información relevante y necesario para negociar un nuevo acuerdo.
La Compañía ha tenido mucho tiempo para revisar y considerar el paquete económico completo de la Unión que se les presentó en abril. Cuando se le presiona para que nos dé una propuesta económica completa, Safeway continúa eludiendo el asunto y solo ha respondido con reducciones y un ajuste mínimo a los pasos de progresión.
Además, la frustración del Sindicato también ha crecido durante las negociaciones debido a que la Compañía no finalizó y realizó contribuciones en su nombre, que deberían haber comenzado en agosto de 2024, al plan de pensiones variable que se negoció en el contrato anterior. Safeway ha estancado la negociación sobre el diseño del plan y el acuerdo de fideicomiso, mientras que sus contribuciones continúan siendo retenidas por la compañía. Hemos ofrecido a Safeway varias fechas para continuar negociando, pero la compañía aún no ha acordado ninguna de ellas.
