UFCW Western States Council Releases 2024 Legislative Scorecard

The UFCW Western States Council has released its 2024 California Legislative Scorecard, which evaluates how California legislators voted on issues important to UFCW members in the past legislative year. Bills that mitigate the harms of abrupt disruptions in access to food and prescription medication, protect workers and the public by ensuring safe staffing levels at grocery and drug-retail stores and regulating self-checkout machines, allow cannabis consumption lounges, and develop a strategic masterplan to end hunger in California were among the key issues considered as UFCW evaluated California’s elected officials’ voting records in 2024.

Demonstrating the effectiveness of UFCW members in communicating their values and priorities to lawmakers, 53 legislators scored 100% on issues important to California’s workers. See each legislator’s scores here: ufcwwest.org/scorecard.

Amber Parrish, executive director, UFCW Western States Council, released the following statement:

“In 2024, UFCW members, the grocery workers, meat packers, cannabis workers, delivery drivers, pharmacists, and other workers in all of our communities, fought back against corporations that prioritize profit over people, remained united and strong, ultimately emerging victorious by the end of the year.

“We were able to enact legislation and other policies that will truly make a difference in the lives of UFCW members. Bills were passed this year that will ensure workers, customers, and communities have advance notice for store closures, as well as prevent workers from being forced to listen to their employer’s views in captive audience meetings, a tactic that employers frequently use to union bust.

“In 2025, we are committed to fighting against the systems that want to keep workers down. We recognize that there is still much to do to safeguard working families from the anti-competitive practices of corporations that seek to exploit both workers and customers for their own gain. There will be big fights in 2025 on discriminatory pricing at grocery stores and reducing the cannabis excise tax for struggling businesses. Together, when we stand united, we can ensure Californians aren’t left reeling from large grocery bills and workers can thrive”.
