The UFCW Local 5 bargaining committee, along with locals 8 G.S. and 648, have met twice with Safeway to begin negotiating a new contract. We have presented the company with non-economic proposals that would improve staffing, scheduling, and job security for our members. Additionally, we requested information from the company needed for bargaining that has yet to be provided to the unions. As such, our economic proposals will be presented as we progress further along in bargaining.

It is early in negotiations, but the company has already responded by proposing to take away positions, reducing premiums, and deleting language that has been in our industry for decades. We know these proposals are unacceptable for our UFCW 5 members. Safeway needs to acknowledge your hard work, increasing security issues, and the rise of the cost of living in today’s economy.

Although the company has canceled our April 4^th date to negotiate, we are still scheduled to meet on April 3^rd, April 10^thand April 11^th.
