Local 5 Grocery Sector Members Approve ‘Unity Dues’
In an overwhelming demonstration of solidarity and resolve to win their upcoming contract fights, Local 5 members working in the grocery industry have voted to approve the “Unity Dues” concept.
The vote, which took place over four days at eleven locations throughout Northern California, establishes a temporary weekly dues increase of $1 to $5 depending on job classification only in the event of a strike. Money raised will go directly to the union’s strike fund to support members who are on strike or locked out.
“Our members have sent a clear message to the grocery industry employers that they are unified and ready to fight to maintain and improve the best contracts in the country’” said Local 5 President John Frahm.
“Their willingness to stand arm in arm to support our union family in the event of a strike demonstrates that they understand the value of sticking together to fight corporate greed and that they are willing to make a personal financial investment to assure their collective success”.
