Walmart to Close Stores Nationwide Including Oakland & San Jose

Walmart announced on January 15 that it was shuttering 154 US locations, including the Oakland and San Jose (Monterey Highway) stores. The Oakland store has been a hotbed of activity for members of Making Change at Walmart and has seen many rallies over the years calling for workers’ rights. It would appear that the Oakland closure is no coincidence.

The leadership and members of Making Change at Walmart are working with their members to blunt the trauma of the closures and are considering next steps.

The company announced that it intends to open a combined 160 supercenters, neighborhood stores and Sam’s Clubs across the country in 2016. Local 5 will continue to fight the intrusion of this anti-union employer into Northern California.
