UFCW Local 5 Negotiations Update

Recently Rite Aid management chose to completely mischaracterize the current bargaining situation instead of telling the truth. As usual, their side of the story is more notable for what they are not saying than what they are.

Rite Aid claims they have offered a medical package that is superior to what you currently have. If that were the truth the union would have accepted it. It is not. The company’s medical plan proposal would place employees in a company plan with members paying an increasingly higher amount of co-insurance every year. Under the company plan employee co-insurance contributions would skyrocket to $667 a month for a family on Kaiser compared to the current $87 under the existing plan. The existing plan is jointly administered by the unions and Rite Aid.

When it comes to the rest of the story on wages this is the truth: When the offered wage increases are put up against the health plan deductibles, co-pays and weekly premiums the proposed wage increases vanish and eats even more into your paycheck. To add insult to injury the company wants to eliminate all step increases for members not at the top rate and set the maximum rate twenty cents above the minimum wage! So much for “generous” wage increases.

Local 5 will continue to pursue a contract offer that is worthy of your consideration. Please continue to consult your union representative, the website and Facebook for updates.
