UFCW Local 5 Safeway Negotiations Update

August 5, 2015

The Local 5 Bargaining Committee met with representatives of Safeway on July 30th and 31st. Some progress was made regarding non-economic matters, however, the bargaining parties are still significantly apart on wage compensation. The union and company have submitted few contract language changes and Safeway has moved away from demanding economic concessions from our members.

The economy in the Bay Area and coastal Northern California has been rapidly expanding with most companies finding it difficult to recruit and retain qualified help without raising wages. Safeway is no exception. Additionally, profits are rising across the board in all industries and our members deserve to share in the wealth they have created.

Local 5 is awaiting additional dates from the company and they will be posted on the website, www.ufcw5.org, as soon as they have been agreed upon.
