Service Employees, Governor & Legislature Agree on $15 Minimum Wage
The Service Employees International Union and UHW have agreed to drop their ballot propositions slated for November in exchange for a legislative path to a $15 minimum wage. Unfortunately for low wage workers this path to $15 won’t be reached until 2022.
Under the proposal the minimum wage will increase by fifty cents per hour in 2017 and 2018 and then by $1 per hour per year until $15 is reached in 2022. The timelines in the ballot propositions achieved $15 in 2020.
The agreement appears to be on the fast track since the Senate and Assembly are scheduled to pass the bill by Thursday and the Governor is set to sign it Friday. In terms of a Sacramento timeline this is breakneck speed.
