SECRETARY TREASURER’S OFFICE
WELCOME TO THE SECRETARY TREASURER’S OFFICE
Dear Sisters & Brothers:
My name is Jack Landes and I am proud to be your Secretary-Treasurer. I can assure you this is a job that I take very seriously and will work hard to keep you trust. I try hard to get around to all areas of the local but I have not had the opportunity to meet all of you, until I do here’s a little bit about myself:
In 1978 I started working for Ralph’s grocery stores as a courtesy clerk, I was 18 years old living on my own in an apartment just trying to survive. That’s when I attended my first contract ratification meeting there was over two thousand members that attended, I’ll never forget the power I felt when everyone got together in one place.
I was promoted to a checker around the same time Lucky’s bought Ralph’s, I was later moved to night crew. A few years later I was promoted to night crew manager. I spent 10 years on nights and only saw a Union representative two times.
After all those years on night crew I was ready for a change, I was transferred and spent 10 more years running the dairy department and checking. I realized at this time in my life, I was going to spend my career in this industry and wanted to find out more about the Union. I became a shop steward and started to get involved, attending union meetings, volunteering my time and helping out on Union picket lines. I was on the picket line in 1980 and was picket captain in 1995. In 1998 I was hired as a union representative and committed to work evenings and especially visit night crews, never forgetting where I came from. Two years later I had the pleasure to become the Secretary-Treasurer for local 1179 in Contra Costa County. I and was reelected twice and ran balanced budgets with healthy surpluses every year. I consider it an obligation to use the treasury only to the extent necessary in order to keep dues as low as possible.
I’ve always been there for the members, being one of the first reps to put my cell phone on my business card and texting and communicating with members day and night seven days a week.
I’ll be one of the most visible union leaders you have ever seen, riding with the reps, visiting members employed all over our jurisdiction in our varied industries. I will be servicing YOU.
Thank you for visiting the website and supporting the union. If you ever need to contact me, don’t hesitate!
Very Sincerely Yours,
Jack Landes, Secretary-Treasurer UFCW Local 5
