Retail Workers Bill of Rights Passes Unanimously
We did it! On Tuesday, November 18th, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to pass The Retail workers Bill of Rights. UFCW5 along with Local 648, UFCW States Council and Jobs with Justice SF have been working to pass a bill called “Formula Retail Worker Bill of Rights”. Supervisors David Chiu and Eric Mar were the primary sponsors of the legislation.
This legislation was focused on large formula retailers and requires them to give two weeks notice on scheduling, will make employers pay a minimum of 1 hours pay if workers’ schedule gets changed within 7 days, and 2 – 4 hours pay if workers’ schedule is changed in less than 24 hours. Additionally, it requires employers to offer hours to part-time workers first before going out and hiring new workers. The ordinance will help achieve fair scheduling and full-time work for 40,000 retail workers in the city.
“I am proud of the work that our union, particular a dedicated group of Macy’s members, has done on this.
Ron Lind, President Local 5
UFCW Local 5 President Ron Lind stated, “I am proud of the work that our union, particular a dedicated group of Macy’s members, has done on this. It is truly historic and has set a standard for the nation that will provide impetus for retail workers to join the UFCW.”
