Major Southern California Grocer Files for Bankruptcy

When Albertsons & Safeway were forced to divest themselves of scores of stores after the Safeway-Cerberus merger, jobs were on the line for thousands of SoCal UFCW members. But then, in walked Haggen a small Bellingham, Washington based chain to save the day. They announced they’d be taking over the divested stores, keeping all the workers and honoring the union contract. Unfortunately, they were unable to keep their head above water in the brutal Southern California grocery industry and recently announced they’d be filing for bankruptcy protection and closing dozens of stores. Hopefully this bankruptcy will go smoother than the A&P debacle back East. One protection for members in the Southland that was not available in this type of scenario before is the new state law on grocery worker retention.
