Improperly Laid-Off Lucky Members Receive Large Back Pay Award
The key carrier arbitration with Lucky-SaveMart has finally been resolved. It was won by the Union based on the principle of seniority. It was difficult to identify and agree upon the correct recipients of back pay by geographical area and the company repeatedly tried to low-ball the Local to lessen the award. The Union had to return to the arbitrator in September for guidance on the back pay amount, and the Employer recently issued the checks to dozens of affected laid off employees in a total amount of back pay of approximately $308,000. This is a great victory in support of the key benefit of seniority rights under a union contract and the result of a union fighting hard for its members and not giving up.
