Grocery Workers Retention Bill on Governor’s Desk

Assembly Bill (AB) 359, the California grocery workers retention bill has passed the State Senate and is on the Governor’s desk. It is not a lock that Governor Brown will sign it. Those of you around at the time will remember Gray Davis vetoing a statewide big box bill while he was in office. We need to do some work to get this signed.

The bill would require that grocery store employees on staff during a purchase of their store by a new company be kept on staff for a minimum of 90 days by the new owner. By signing this bill the Governor would greatly enhance the likelihood of members keeping their jobs.

Please call Governor Brown at (916) 445-2841 and encourage your members to do the same. A simple “My name is _____, I am a member of UFCW Local 5 and I urge the Governor to sign AB 359, It is the right thing to do for grocery workers and the State.”
