Farmworker Overtime Bill out of Committee

On June 29 SB 1066 by Lorena Gonzalez (D-San Diego) made it out of the Senate Labor Committee. Currently farmworkers don’t get overtime pay until ten hours has passed. The reason why farmworkers are not covered has its roots in the National Labor Relations Law of the 1930’s which exempted farm laborers and domestic workers from overtime. This was a demand by racist Southern Democrats that led to their support for the legislation.

UFCW Local 5 Agricultural Director Pete Maturino & Local 5 Communications/Political Director Mike Henneberry attended the hearing and testified in favor of the bill. They also met with Assembly Members who voted the wrong way last time and encouraged them to correct their vote this time around.
