East Coast Chain A&P to Lay Off Thousands on Thanksgiving
In a move that at first looks like a sick joke The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company (A&P) announced on September 2 it will be laying off over 4,600 workers on Thanksgiving Day. In a country where corporate callousness has been the norm since the Reagan days, this move is shocking in its depravity. The company preceded its Thanksgiving layoff announcement by demanding that the bankruptcy judge lower severance for laid off workers and increase bonuses for managers. No wonder A&P, a dominant presence in the grocery industry since 1859, is going out of business. For more on the A&P debacle click here.
