Assembly Passes Bill Requiring Double Time on Thanksgiving & Christmas

The State Assembly passed a bill January 27 requiring employers with more than 500 employees operating grocery and non-food retail stores to pay double time on Christmas and Thanksgiving. The bill’s author Lorena Gonzalez, a former union rep and Democrat from San Diego, said the point of the bill is to force employers like Walmart & Kmart to pay “the industry standard.” Assemblywoman Gonzalez was referring to standard practice under union contracts in grocery where workers receive a minimum of double time on Christmas & New Years. The bill still must pass the Senate and be signed by the Governor to become law. Click here for more information on the legislation.
