Analysts Predict Walmart Neighborhood Store Expansion from 645 to Over 3,400

Grocery industry analysts are predicting that Walmart will abandon its supercenter oriented growth plans and emphasize expansion in the neighborhood store format. They expect Walmart to increase the number of neighborhood stores from 645 currently to over 3,400.

Local 5 has expected this shift for some time based on the saturation of rural and suburban areas with supercenters. Neighborhood stores are mostly located in urban areas, the one spot Walmart hasn’t wrecked. The local has had a pretty good record of stopping neighborhood store expansion at the city level working with city councils and planning boards. It is imperative that these efforts be maintained and expanded given the announcement about the huge increase in the number of neighborhood stores that will compete toe to toe with union employers.
