Alameda City Council Passes Grocery Workers Retention Ordinance

The Alameda City Council passed an ordinance 5-0 on Tuesday April 21 authorizing a grocery workers retention law. The new rule requires covered employers to keep workers on staff for a minimum of 90 days after a sale. Under current law an employer can let workers go for any reason or no reason after a sale. This ordinance corrects that injustice.
Credit goes to the members from Safeway, Lucky, Foodmaxx and the Firefighters, Teachers, UNITEHERE & IFPTE who attended and fought for the new rule.
Local 5 will be coordinating similar ordinances throughout the union’s jurisdiction.
